June 13, 2019 - Ontario Chapter of HIMSS AGM, presentations by Dr. Denise Hines and Dr. Anne Snowdon

Join the Ontario Chapter of HIMSS and Dr. Denise Hines, Chief Americas Officer at HIMSS, at our Annual General Meeting retreat at the Shaw Club in Niagara-on-the-Lake. (June 13, 2019)

This will be a unique opportunity to hear Dr. Denise Hines present on the renewed vision for HIMSS in North America (and Canada). The session is intended to be a collaborative discussion with leaders and HCIT stakeholders in Ontario focusing on the current challenges and opportunities facing our industry today.

About our speaker:

Dr. Denise Hines, DHA, PMP, FHIMSS is Chief Americas Officer at HIMSS. She is an award-winning, nationally recognized expert in healthcare technology. Dr. Hines has more than two decades of healthcare experience in a variety of settings, including health systems, physician offices, home health, technology vendors, consulting, state government and revenue management.

Dr. Hines recently was a member of the HIMSS Board of Directors and the Chair Emeritus for HIMSS North America Board of Directors. She is the past president of the HIMSS Georgia Chapter and was recognized as the 2012 HIMSS Chapter Leader of the Year, with GA HIMSS named the 2012 Chapter of the Year. In 2017, she was recognized with the prestigious Women of the Year in Technology – Small Enterprise Award from Georgia’s Women in Technology (WIT).

In 2011, Dr. Hines founded eHealth Services Group, a health technology consulting firm focused on leading healthcare delivery transformation through technology. She is renowned for building service and results-oriented organizations and she possesses a passion for the widespread integration of technology and healthcare.

Dr. Hines holds her doctorate degree in healthcare administration where she focused her studies on the use of electronic personal health records and the impact on patient health. She also maintains certifications in project management, software development, and healthcare law. She is on the Board of Advisors for Georgia State University’s Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions, as well as the Advisory Board for the College of Coastal Georgia.

industry, there is a new opportunity that I would like to bring to your attention.  

Our Past-President, Todd MacCallum, who was instrumental in establishing the chapter's
leadership team and vision, has recently been nominated to the ballot to serve on
the HIMSS North America Nominating Committee.  HIMSS will be sending out the ballot
via email to HIMSS members in the coming weeks and I would encourage you to consider
voting for Todd to ensure that we have a Canadian voice on the HIMSS North America
Nominating Committee in 2019-2020.

2020/2021 Call for Board Members

The HIMSS Ontario Chapter is seeking digital health leaders to join our volunteer Board. We have three (3) positions available for the 2020 - 2021 term including the position of President-Elect and two (2) Director positions as Members-at-Large. A brief description of the roles is provided below.

Please submit expressions of interest to Dr. Darren Larsen, incoming President,(darren.larsen@ontariomd.com)  and Susan Sepa outgoing President (susansepa@gmail.com). Expressions of Interest should address the following questions. Your responses will be used as your candidate statement in the election process and could be posted on the HIMSS website. 

 

Expression of Interest:

1)    Brief overview (max 250 words) of your professional background

2)    How long have you been a HIMSS Member 

3)    Why do you want to join the Board of the Ontario Chapter? What can you contribute to the Board?

4)    Which position are you interested in being considered for? 

Process: 

  • Submit your Expression of Interest by June 10th
  • Candidates will be shared with the membership for voting from June 11th to June 19th
  • Successful candidates will be notified by June 22 
  • Chapter Membership will be notified the week of June 22
  • New Board will be announced by July 1st, the start of the 2020/21 fiscal year

Role Descriptions:

President-Elect Role Description

  • The President-Elect is an Officer of the Board (there are 5 Officers including the President, Past-President, Secretary, Treasurer and President-Elect). Officers may serve for 3 consecutive terms in the same office. 
  • The President-Elect succeeds into the President role in the following term, then Past-President role and thereby serves a minimum of 3 years. 
  • The President-Elect shall, in the absence of the President, preside at all meetings of the chapter and the Board of Directors
  • The President-Elect supports the President and provides leadership to the Board and the Chapter, and supports the management of the affairs of the Board

Member-at-Large Role Description

  • Director of the Board
  • All Board members can serve up to eight (8) consecutive years on the Board
  • May choose at any time to apply for available Officer roles of the Board (Secretary, Treasurer, President-Elect) 
  • May choose to serve as a Chair and / or Co- chair of one of the committees

May 24, 2018 - Sharon MacSween of Mackenzie Health on EMRAM 6 with EPIC, Networking

The journey to achieving EMRAM 6 – from the perspective of an EPIC hospital in Ontario

On Thursday, May 24th the Ontario Chapter of HIMSS will be hosting a networking event and presentation at the new Globe and Mail centre in downtown Toronto.  This evening event will feature an engaging presentation from Sharon MacSween – Director, Clinical Informatics at Mackenzie Health on their EMRAM 6 journey with EPIC and will be followed by the opportunity for networking over drinks and appetizers.

 

Presentation Overview The HIMSS EMRAM maturity model is a globally recognized framework for measuring clinical and operation outcomes associated with organizational transformation in Acute Care.  MacKenzie Health recently embarked on their EMRAM journey to level 6 which included a current state benchmark and a vision to reaching their goals – through the implementation of an integrated EPIC patient record.


Value to Audience Attend this event to hear about MacKenzie’s strategy for reaching EMRAM 6 with EPIC, the lessons learned to date and the long-term vision.  Attendees will learn about the approach used to drive the transformation initiative from both a planning and execution perspective.  By attending this event, you will walk away with valuable insights that can be applied to projects in your own environments and will have the opportunity to network and share ideas with your peers.

For CPHIMS professionals:  Event attendees can claim 1 CE credit towards maintaining their CPHIMS certification.

Call for committee volunteers

The Ontario Chapter of HIMSS Board is an all-volunteer board and we want you! You can volunteer to work with the HIMSS board on a monthly basis as a committee member, or volunteer to work on a particular event during the year, it’s up to you and your schedule. We have opportunities that allow you to be flexible with your time commitment, as well as opportunities for those interested in more involvement and greater time commitments.

Bring your expertise in HIT and join us. The Ontario Chapter of HIMSS is looking for volunteers interested in joining the following Board Committees:

Education & Events Committee (Chair: Dr. Asim Masood, CMIO-William Osler Health System)

The Education and Events Committee is responsible for developing and implementing plans for annual education and networking opportunities that will have a value to our members and the wider healthcare community. Each year, a relevant Ontario educational theme is selected and the committee works diligently to find the best speakers available for each of our educational sessions that draw upon that year-long theme. They have to know what topics are pertinent to our participants, and they need to work to establish connections in the industry to pull the best talent from across the country to educate our members on those topics.

If you like making connections and staying abreast of current developments, then this committee may be for you. This committee requires volunteer participation throughout the year and also on an event-specific basis.

(Time commitment 4-6 hours per month, 8-16 hours two months leading up to event)

 

Communication and Social Media (Chair: Dr. Darren Larsen, CMIO-Ontario MD)

The Communications Committee is responsible for engaging with our membership community and industry stakeholders across Ontario. This includes employing effective use of social media, web sites, blogs and email communications to our membership and across the industry. It involves a little bit of social media experience along with the literary capabilities in order to create content and craft regular communications.

If you like to write, and create, then this committee may be for you.

(Time commitment 6-12 hours per month)

 

Partnerships and Membership (Chair: Susan Sepa, Group Director-Infoway)

Partnerships with Healthcare industry associations and working groups in order to improve outcomes through the effective use of HIT is core to our chapter mandate. The Partnerships and Membership Committee works identify opportunities for collaboration and engages with industry stakeholders on key topics, events and roundtables across Ontario. As well, the committee works to grow our membership base so that as many people as possible can take advantage of the opportunities that membership in our chapter presents. This includes both individual and vendor membership and participation in chapter activities throughout the year.

If you like working with people and furthering the cause of the Ontario Chapter of HIMSS, then this committee may be for you.

(Time commitment 6-12 hours per month)
