The 4th National Institute on Nursing Informatics is a unique educational opportunity for nurses interested in learning more about advances in Canadian nursing and health informatics. The 2½ day onsite institute will focus on key issues and challenges related to informatics in practice, administration, research and education.

Prior to the institute 2½ day immersion, attendees will be provided with access to a series of short (15-20 minutes) preparatory webinars to be viewed at their own pace and convenience as well as recommended readings.  Webinar content will focus on informatics foundations to prepare registrants for the onsite program. These sessions will focus on the evolution of informatics, clinical data standards and core concepts related to information and communication technology in healthcare.

Onsite, attendees will be provided with a recap of the webinar key learnings and an opportunity to discuss the preparatory materials in more detail. Over the course of the Institute, attendees will hear from a variety of faculty and practitioners from the field and participate in a number of interactive sessions focused on a range of informatics topics of particular interest to nurses. The speakers bringing their perspectives, expertise and experiential challenges to bear on the institute discussions will include individuals with expertise in the areas of:

    • health information system implications for nursing
    • human factors and systems design
    • consumer informatics
    • privacy and the management of personal health information
    • the use of social media in nursing
    • organizational change management
    • telemedicine and telehomecare
    • primary and secondary uses of health and nursing information

The Institute will be led by Dr. Lynn Nagle, a national leader in nursing and health informatics, and supported by a number of guest lecturers and discussion leaders. Participants will benefit from the extensive practical, academic, and research knowledge of the faculty and collective experience of the other Institute attendees.

The curriculum will cover a broad range of topics with content being delivered through a combination of didactic webinars, facilitated discussions and interactive panel presentations. With the support of expert faculty led discussions and demonstrations of practical experiences and lessons learned the Institute will further advance attendees ability to apply theoretical concepts in practice. Participants will be equipped with sufficient foundational knowledge and resources to be able to subsequently participate in informatics related operational and educational discussions and activities in their work settings.

    Audience

The program will be of particular interest to nurses currently working in informatics but also to nurse executives and nurses in all practice settings who wish to broaden their knowledge and understanding of health informatics. In addition, nurse educators who are responsible for the integration of informatics into nursing curricula and nurses considering a future career in informatics will benefit from this Institute.

Throughout the 2½ day institute, participants will have the opportunity to interact and network with other attendees. Attendees will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Centre for Professional Development, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto.
